MLA (Modern Language Association) is the format style required by most Humanities based disciplines in college, and is especially critical within English, Composition, and Literature courses. Purdue's Online Writing Lab (OWL) is considered one of the more trusted guides found online.

Key Aspects to Remember

  • Proper Heading (Your Name, Instructor's Name, Course, and Date) in upper left corner of the first page.
    • Date format should be Day Month Year - 24 August 2022
  • Proper Title centered across the top of the introductory paragraph, after the Heading.
  • Essay should double-spaced, using Times New Roman Numeral font size 12.
  • Works Cited page for bibliographic entries.
    • The title - Works Cited - is centered across the last section of the essay.
  • For intext citations within the body of the essay, enclose direct quotes with quotation marks. 
    • No punctuation within quotation marks.
    • A period (full stop) after the last parenthesis.
    • Include Author's Last Name and page number within parenthesis. EX: (Lindsay 23).
