This libguide is a page dedicated to the pursuit of Genealogy, which is the study of family history.
Family history does not happen overnight. While online access has made sources more easily identifiable, many records still exist in the physical sense and have not been transferred to digital format. Family history takes can take years of research and still never be truly completed.
How do I get started? The best place to get started is researching your oldest living relative and asking questions about the family and how you are? Most families know names, some dates and a possible ancestral heritage?
An online or physical tree may help you work out birth and death dates for your relatives on both maternal and paternal lines.

FamilySearch is a nonprofit organization and website offering genealogical records, education, and software. It is operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and is closely connected with the church's Family History Department.
While Ancestry is a paid database, familysearch.org is very similar to the resources of ancestry.com and is a free resource for genealogists! family historians. :)
By creating your own family tree on sites like Ancestry.com or familysearch.org you are extending and assisting others in building a larger network of family history! :)

Why do Mormons research their family history and keep records for families?
Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often referred to as Mormons, research their family history because of their strong faith in the eternal nature of families. Mormons believe that families can be together forever when "sealed" through a special temple ordinance, or ceremony (learnreligions.com, 2020).

My personal journal through family history / Genealogy
I have studied family history for 20+ years since a high school assignment in which I interviewed my grandparents. I also took family history genealogy courses during my Masters in Library and Information Science and studied under Kory Meyerink, the author of the book Printed Sources which is a standard in most libraries.
