English 1A Prof. Urmston: Make the Case

Make The Case

This Guide is to help you get started on your Make the Case Paper. Please refer to your class syllabus and module for more information on the paper guidelines and the full prompt.

Prompt

On October 13th, 2016, The Nobel committee awarded Bob Dylan the Nobel Prize for Literature. One could argue whether or not Dylan’s work, stripped of its melodies, stands up to the work of Neruda, Seamus Heaney, or T.S. Eliot, but for the purpose of this paper, I would like for you to consider one of the following artists or duos, and make the case for why they, too, deserve the Nobel Prize:

Leonard Cohen Joni Mitchell Gil Scott Heron
Bruce Springsteen Paul Simon Tom Waits
John Lennon Paul McCartney Tupac Shakur
Stevie Wonder Lucinda Williams Prince
Mick Jagger Keith Richards Patti Smith
Walter Becker Donald Fagan George Harrison
David Bowie Eminem John Prine
Phil Ochs Lou Reed Cole Porter
Nina Simone Curtis Mayfield Steve Earle
Woody Guthrie Todd Rundgren
